Win a lot of time – how a fountain changes the lives of women

Date:

What is self -evident for us is treated in some places such as liquid gold in Mozambique in Africa. We are talking about drinking water. A fountain in the neighborhood can live here and have a major impact on the economic situation of families.

Ines Julio had to go to the river four times a day to have enough water in the hut. It took a total of two hours for a route. Her husband sometimes accompanied her because it is often dangerous on the river bed. “Time and again women are bitten by crocodiles,” the mother from Pungue explains. But she is not supported by her partner while wearing. “It is the case in our culture that women do this activity.”

Thanks to the Austrian Agency for Development Cooperation (ADA), a fountain could be built for the community of Ines Julio that has considerably improved the life of the villagers. Women in particular benefit from this important infrastructure.

Because of the built water pump, women not only save hard for many hours of hard work, but they also get a lot of time. They have begun to grow fruit and vegetables and can therefore not only deliver themselves, but also sell excess to the local markets. Some have already built their own small stores and thus make a decisive contribution to the economic development of their community.

Sustainable improvement through initiatives to gender equality
Not only this project shows how targeted development cooperation can improve the lives of many people sustainably. Savings and initiatives for gender equality – supported by the ADA – are also changing.

“When I come home now, my wife no longer rushes with a glass of water, we sit down and talk together – at eye level,” says Martinho Pedro Wahela. He has been married to his wife Carlota Augusto for 35 years, but only through the project do they have a tall marriage. “Even our neighbors are a bit jealous of us,” laughs the couple. But it was a big change. “We talked about it with our children. Not that they are surprised when the father is in the kitchen now and ensure that nothing is on,” said the 50-year-old.

The family could buy bricks through the savings groups and build a new house. “In the meantime, we also have new plates, radio and clothing for the children,” said the four -year -old mother. And is there also something that only buys Carlota Augusto for himself? “I would like to have a new commitment to my stand. I am selling peanuts and fishing.”

Despite all the initiatives, the African does not stand up to do something good alone. Nevertheless: the Austrian agency for development cooperation has made an important contribution to strengthening the local community to its projects.
