Two winter sports enthusiasts wanted, three found and rescued: If an example of operational efficiency was needed, the mountain rescue service Mayrhofen in the Tyrolean Zillertal would have earned an award. In any case, the mountain rescuers rescued three lost freeriders from their predicament on Friday afternoon.
Two boys from England (14 and 15 years) had left the Horberg ski area in Schwendau due to poor visibility and snowfall. The result: the freeriders lost their orientation and got stuck on a pull track. They then placed an emergency call around 5 p.m.
Suddenly there was also a Russian
Seven men from the Mayrhofen mountain rescue team took the Penkenbahn to the ski area and then skied to the English. Of course there was an “aha experience” for the emergency services on site: they met a Russian freerider (32) next to the boys.
“He happened to be there,” said Florian Stock, operations manager of Mayrhofen’s mountain rescue service. “The three have decided to wait for us together.” This was the best decision – also because of the large amount of fresh snow.
The trio was taken to the mountain station with a snowblower unharmed and finally they descended into the valley by cable car.
