On Thursday at 1 a.m., the fire brigade in Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia was alerted by sirens – as reported, a fire had broken out in an apartment building. Arson is now suspected.
The fire in the stairwell and heavy smoke blocked the escape route for six people. The alarmed fire brigade had to rescue the residents with ladders.
Initially, the causes of the fire were still unknown, but after an initial investigation and assessment by an expert, the suspicion of arson was confirmed.
“A suspicious person was observed in the vicinity at the time of the crime, so we currently assume a single perpetrator,” explains Chief Inspector Werner Mochorko of the National Criminal Investigation Service. “But we are urgently looking for more information that can help us with the investigation.”
