Half a year after the collapse of a station present in Serbia, in which 16 people have lost their lives, the calls after new elections become louder. Students demonstrate loudly since the accident, now they call for immediate dissolution for the national meeting.
The accident of six months ago was widespread protests against corruption and the government. The calls for new elections in the Balkans are increasing. “We call for the immediate dissolution of the national meeting and the proclamation of parliamentary elections,” said students in the Instagram Online Service on Monday. They have been organizing mass protests in Serbia since the accident.
“Vecht is going in a new phase”
Last week the largest trade unions in the country were demonstrated for the first time with the students against the government. On the day of work (May 1), a few thousand people in the capital Belgrade and the second largest city of Novi Sad, where the accident took place, went to the street.
With the joint protests, the “fight” is transferred to a “new phase”, the student protest movement had written on Instagram in advance.
Protests since the accident in November
The accident on November 1, 2024 with 16 dead had caused the wave of protest in Serbia, which has been going on for months. If it was initially the event of the cause of the accident, the almost daily mass protests are now directed against the government of President Aleksandar Vucic, whose management and politics have considerably autocratic characteristics, and the widespread corruption in the country.
The protests are mainly worn by students. They blocked the universities and organized huge meetings. The Serbian government is under great pressure because of the protests. President Vucic repeatedly describes the protests as controlled by abroad.
