A new leak has occurred on the International Space Station (ISS). Air is leaking from the Russian service module ‘Zvezda’, but the leak has ‘no impact on the crew’, a NASA manager said. There is no reason to panic.
The leak was discovered at the back of ‘Zvezda’ – at the point where the Russian ‘Progress’ capsules usually dock, the ISS program manager of the US space agency NASA, Joel Mantalbano, said at a press conference at the Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday. at Cape Canaveral in Florida. “The teams watch what happens. We are working with our Russian colleagues on the next steps.”
“No impact on safety”
“Currently this has no impact on crew safety or operation (of the ISS), but it is something everyone should be aware of,” Mantalbano said. It is not the first time that leaks in this part of the Russian service module had to be repaired. According to the NASA manager, ‘Zvezda’ loses more than 0.9 kilograms of air per day.
Series of leaks on Russian modules
In recent years, leaks of Russian hardware have repeatedly caused problems on the ISS. A dramatic incident occurred in December 2022 when a Soyuz capsule began rapidly leaking coolant into space ahead of a planned Russian spacewalk, which was then immediately canceled. With few other options, the Russian space agency Roscosmos sent an empty Soyuz capsule to the ISS and returned the leaking spacecraft empty to Earth for analysis.
In February last year, the Russian space freighter ‘Progress 82’ suffered an ammonia leak while docked with the space station. Seven months later, another leak was discovered, this time in the Russian multi-function laboratory module “Nauka”.
