Weather Caprioles – The most flashed in this place

Date:

More than 100,000 flashes in Austria found Austria in 2024 – a record year. That is 35 percent more than in 2023. In the current Blitzatlas 2024, the values of all 96 districts are included. The Styrians had a particularly large number of thunderstorms. A place stands out.

The Voitsberg district was the Austrian Blitz -Hotspot last year. Here, 2.52 effects per square kilometer were measured, followed by Bruck-Mürzzuschlag (2.26). But Krems on the Danube (Lower Austria) also had a lightning of 2.11. It was the least affected in Steyr (Upper Austria). There were only 0.26 carefully. Feldkirch (0.42) was also spared in Vorarlberg.

It was most common in styria
Styria stands out under the federal states with 1.63 screens per square kilometer. With nearly 27,000 strokes, this was 27 percent of all measured events in Austria. In 2024, almost 5,000 flashes from the earth were registered in the districts of Bruck-Mürzzuschlag.

The statistical values relate to flashes and not to strokes. Background: Lightning (English flashes) often consist of a single discharge, which is rather common in the same flash channel within a second to 15 and more discharges – so congenital strokes.

170 measuring stations in Europe
With the basis of the data from approximately 170 measuring stations in Europe, Aldis and BLIDs offer their customers current lightning data.

Aldis is a joint project of the OVE Austrian Association for Electrical Engineering and APG Austria Power Grid AG for lightning location and lightning documentary in Central European space.

The 30/30 rule for thunderstorms
Most accidents even occur in the beginning and at the end of thunderstorms. The thunderstorm experts also have a tip: here the danger is often underestimated and many believe “that is still possible” or “is already over”, because it is not raining or raining yet. A rule of thumb is the 30/30 rule: if there is only 30 seconds between lightning and thunder, the thunderstorm is only ten kilometers away and you have to look for protection quickly. You must leave this safe place only 30 minutes after the last observed lightning.
