In recent hours, a group of gunmen entered the property and “randomly” fired at customers before fleeing
At least 21 people were killed in three shootings last night and this morning at entertainment venues in South Africa, 15 of them in a single incident, the National Police said on Sunday, explaining that all incidents are under investigation.
The 15 dead have been identified in a shooting at Nomzamo Park tavern, near Soweto, just outside Johannesburg, where a further nine people were injured.
Those responsible have only been identified as a group of gunmen who entered the property with pistols and assault rifles firing “randomly” at the customers before fleeing in a white Toyota Quantum.
Four more people have died and another eight are in critical condition after another shooting in Pietermartzburg, KwaZulu-Natal state, police officer Nonhlanhla Kubeka confirmed to News24.
Finally, two other people were killed and four others injured in a third shooting at a bar in the town of Ekurhuleni, in Gauteng province. “Four men, one of whom was armed with 9mm pistols, entered the tavern and started firing randomly at customers,” said Colonel Dimakatso Sello, a spokesman for the Gauteng police.
The shootings and acts of violence in the country’s bars have become a particularly worrying phenomenon for South African authorities after the poisoning of 26 people in the Eastern Cape on 26 June.
