A request from the Upper Austrian fishing association for the shooting of Aalscholvers causes indignation about “Animal Welfare Austria”. Fish that are on the large shaft ponds in the vicinity of Kremsmünster are enormously threatened according to the application. “These ponds do not fall into those areas on the Traun, where the cormorant can be hunted. This is a specially protected area that has been identified as a habitat of the Arenscholling and other bird species,” emphasizes Michaela Lehner, lawyer of the Animal Welfare Association.
The State Fishing Association rented the three large shaft ponds from the Abbey of Kremsmünster and regularly delivers the Benedictine abbey with Christmas carp in the fall. For this year, however, the fishermen assume that the catch will be enormous among those of recent years.
“In March, about 30 cormorants suddenly emerged, who remained until mid -April and caught their necks,” explains Kunibert Battige, president of the State Fishery Association.
He points out that each of these birds would destroy between half of half and a kilogram of fish every day. “With 30 copies, this means a fish loss of 20 to 25 kilos per day. Unfortunately, this is also a significant economic damage for us, we used 4,500 young carp this year.”
Battige believes that dead can help to scare the cormorants so much that they have not settled here for weeks and eat uncontrollably.
However, the Animal Protection Association has applied to the BH Kirchdorf BH. Lehner: “We demand objective evidence in the form of an independent report for the alleged damage.” If the stock is threatened, it proposes optical or acoustic scan measures.
“We are not even buried at the moment. But if we are denied our property, the fish farm will be sooner or later. The result would be that even more fishing should be imported from abroad,” Battigen said.
