Bang Moments – brick hail: roof falls from historic tower

In the eastern Chinese province of Anhui, hundreds of bricks fall into the depths of a historic drum tower on Monday. The roof of the approximately 15 -meter -high building suddenly admitted – passers -by – had to come to safety, but nobody was injured.

The incident took place in the Fengyang district, about 300 kilometers south of Beijing. According to the Chinese state media, eyewitnesses reported that the collapse continued for about a minute or two.

“I clearly heard one brick after the other fell,” a resident said the “Beijing News”. At the time of the incident, according to the authorities, nobody was on the field in front of the tower.

Trommelturm is an important tourist attraction
The so-called Fengyang drum tower was originally built in 1375. The construction was traditional to announce ceremonies or announce the time. Nowadays it is one of the largest of its kind in China and it is an important tourist attraction.

However, the damaged structure does not come from the Middle Ages: the upper tower was rebuilt in 1995, the foundation below is part of the original building of the Ming Dynasty. Restoration work was only completed last year. In March 2024, loose bricks were recently repaired on the roof.

Passers -by -by happiness in accident
According to the local cultural and tourist authority, there were no injuries. The cause of the incident is currently being investigated.

Fengyang is considered a cultural region: the place is the home of Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), who became known as Hongwu-Kaiser.
