A short walk in the Green can do wonders: enough for 20 minutes in the forest to measure the stress level measurably.
In the Wienerwald, 66 healthy adults were tested in two groups for a study by the Meduni Vienna, which was published in the “Forests” journal. One group spent time in the forest, the other in a gray city environment without enlarging.
The result: “The forest group showed a significant reduction in the stress hormone cortisol – from 4 to 2 ng/ml”, while there was no effect in the city. The mood also remained stable in the countryside, in the city it fell by a quarter. The negative effect in the forest fell by twelve percent.
The researchers ask for consequences for city planning and health system: more nature in the city, more green on prescription. Forest walks are an easily accessible and cheap measure, also for people without a holiday budget. The message is therefore: Bos works – fast, effective and for everyone.
Planned further studies
Further studies are to investigate the effects of longer stay, different forest types and seasonal changes in psychological wells. Multi -sensory nature experiences – such as forest scents or bird voices – are becoming increasingly focused.
