Glacier crashes and buried village under itself

Date:

Rare photos from Switzerland: the birch glacier broke down in the Canton Valais and bury the village partially. About 300 people were brought to safety on time. The regional management staff had already warned them about the threat of the threat of abortion.

On Wednesday afternoon, around 3.30 pm, the birch glacier actually crashed according to reports. Millions of tons of debris from a top above that had been moving en masse for a long time, therefore hit the glacier and tore it deep. The departure not only shook the Swiss village in the Lötschental, but also buried it. Recordings (see also posts below) show a thick dust cloud that swallows the valley, as well as ice masses and boulders that are moving.

The community is high in the Alps. Geologists had already observed and warned movements on the eastern flank of the top for a danger to the birch glacier. The Swiss newspaper “Le Temps” reported that the glacier had recently moved downhill more than ten meters a day. The first small avalanches had left Tuesday evening.

A person misses
The exact damage is not yet known. According to the initial information, there is neither death or injuries. However, a person is missing. Several buildings will probably have been hit by the Scree Avalanche, the Lonza River is blocked in some places by the rock and ice mass. “An incredible amount of material came into the valley,” said Matthias Ebener of the local authorities.

“We will make it possible to make it possible and rebuild the village,” promised Matthias Bellwald, mayor of Blatten.

Further landslide possible
As reported, around 300 residents left their houses more than a week ago at the instructions of the authorities. Above all they were private. About 100 buildings were also deleted as a precaution. In the beginning it was unclear how the situation developed. Measurement data indicated an increasing instability of the glacier. “Five days ago, no one had thought that a mountain we had admired for years and thought it was immobile,” Bellwald said immediately after the evacuation.

Now geologists and other emergency services try to capture the size of the damage. To prevent a break in a dam and the needle, a deeper lake was removed as a precautionary measure. According to “Le Temps”, further landslides and consequential damage cannot be excluded.

The cause of the fall in the glacier has not been fully clarified. The affected zone is in a permafrost area that is increasingly thawing as a result of climate change.
