After the enormous abortion in the Canton Valais, the rubble mountain stacks over the spilled village blats, partly up to 100 meters high. The authorities have announced this according to the first measurements. The area is still so unstable that clean -up work is excluded.
As the cantonal geologist Raphael Mayoraz explained to the Swiss newspaper “Le Nouvelliste”, the material is currently “firm”, but that can change at any time. The expert had landed directly onto the Schuttberg for the first time to check the consistency. The potential risk factor: glacier ice cream. It is estimated that there is about a third of the nine million cubic meters of ice residues of the broken glacier.
Dutch unstable – Ice can lead to movement
“So far we have not noticed large cracks or collapse,” said Mayoraz. “However, that can change when the ice starts to melt.” With increasing temperatures, there is a risk of extra instability. To identify changes at an early stage, cameras were installed in the disaster area. They arrange both the Schuttberg and the reservoir around the clock.
The Lonza River, which was flowed by blats, is now running in a new bed that is formed by the rubble. The water guidance is “relatively controlled”, Mayor emphasized. Here too, potential material movements are closely observed.
Further damage in the Valais due to muds
In the meantime, a different landslide took place in the Upper Val de Bagnes: a mud flow destroyed a provisional emergency bridge near Lourtier on Monday morning, which was only built in September 2024 after storms. The bridge connected the cities of Champsec, Lourtier and the Upper Valley. The municipality confirmed corresponding reports. Already in the summer of 2024 Muries had already been rolled in the valley in the Wild Stream Fregnoley – The power must now be protected.
