A prototype launch vehicle for SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft exploded and caught fire during a test in Texas. This means that SpaceX owner and Tesla founder Elon Musk has suffered a setback in his goal of launching the next generation of the “Starship” into orbit this year.
“Yeah, actually not good. The team is assessing the damage,” Musk tweeted. The explosion was streamed live on NASA’s website. In the future, not all 33 engines will be tested at the same time, he announced. The prototype 7 of the rocket booster Super Heavy was apparently only damaged, not destroyed.
His space company SpaceX lost a total of four prototypes of the “Starship” itself during high-altitude tests in 2020 and 2021. They exploded on landing. In May 2021, the first “Starship” returned safely to Earth.
