No New Tickets – London Heathrow Airport Limited Passenger Numbers

Date:

London’s Heathrow Airport has introduced a limit on the number of departing passengers for the summer months. As CEO John Holland-Kaye announced in an open letter on Tuesday, an upper limit of 100,000 passengers per day should apply from now until September 11. He called on airlines to stop selling tickets for this period.

According to Holland-Kaye, there are some critical functions at the airport that are understaffed, most notably ground handling. For example, the companies in question do not have employees at check-in or baggage handling.

Flight cancellations and lost pastries
“With regularly more than 100,000 passengers a day on departure, we have had phases where service has dropped below acceptable levels,” the Heathrow boss wrote. These include long waiting times, delays for vulnerable passengers, lost luggage, flight delays and last minute cancellations.

There have been major problems at UK airports for weeks. The reason is usually a lack of staff – employees were laid off due to the corona pandemic and now some functions are missing. In addition, employees are repeatedly absent in the short term due to infections. There are also technical problems. Heathrow Airport ordered airlines on Monday to cancel dozens of flights due to congestion.
