Almost until the day exactly ten years ago, the styric capital was shaken by a similar tragedy. It was June 20, 2015 when a certain Alen R. climbed in his off -road vehicle around 12 noon and traveled through the city center of Graz.
The then 26-year-old killed three people, including a four-year-old Child-36, was seriously injured. The madness went into the history of domestic crime as an “Amocran of Graz” – and made the headlines worldwide.
It was a somewhat cloudy spring with a maximum of 20 degrees. In the afternoon the Schani gardens around Griesplatz and Hauptplatz are well visited, many people walk through the city center. Then suddenly screams, fear of death, panic!
With his car from the Daewoo Rexton car, the family vehicle who had fled to Austria as a child from the War in Bosnia as a child from the Bosnian war, his unprecedented man. With his more than two tons of SUV, he hunted two kilometers. In the area of a supermarket, he climbed out of the SUV and injured two passers -by seriously -a knife. In Schmiedgasse the handcuffs finally clicked for R .. In 2016 he was on trial.
“Planned mass murder”
In his trial, R. showed himself in a white suit, almost like an “innocent angel”. His scarce comment: “I acted for fear.” However, it is “planned mass murder” in court. The verdict, also because the jury unanimously alerted him to the insanity: life imprisonment!
At the end of September 2023 he wrote the final chapter of one of the worst crimes in the post -war period itself: R. was found dead in his individual cell in the infamous Stein Detention Center in Lower Austria.
