Vincent Fraser traveled across Fontana Lake, North Carolina, in a single-engine plane to survey a piece of land he had acquired. Also on board: his father-in-law. But then came the horror: the engine of the small plane gave up and the 31-year-old had to act quickly.
Fraser was flying over the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on July 3 when the engine lost power and climbing was no longer possible. “That’s when I realized something was seriously wrong,” the 31-year-old told the Washington Post of the dramatic moments.
Although Fraser didn’t get his pilot’s license until October and had only flown about 100 hours, he didn’t panic. Instead, he went through his emergency checklist and even managed to restart the engine.
But then the engine eventually died. At the time, the machine was at an altitude of about 5,500 feet (nearly 1,700 meters), gliding over mountains and forests, Fraser told the Washington Post on Tuesday.
GoPro camera filmed emergency landing
At first he wanted to land in a river, but when Highway 19 appeared in front of him, he decided to make an emergency landing on it. His GoPro camera filmed Fraser dodging power lines and cars, eventually landing the plane safely on the ground.
