The bath waters of Austria went to fourth place in an EU-wide ranking. There are Cyprus, Bulgaria and Greece for us. The European Environment Agency analyzed lakes and rivers in this country.
Accordingly, 95.8 percent achieved “excellent quality”. This is an above average result because it was only 85.4 percent about the EU. Main light is Albania, where only 16 percent have achieved this result. Hungary, Estonia and Poland are also located at the bottom of the ranking of the EU Bathing Water Report 2024.
In Austria, only 1.5 percent of the lakes and rivers surveyed had poor water quality. In general, according to the report, the quality of the coastal waters is better than that of rivers and lakes. The employees of the environmental agency therefore proposed to use infrastructure if necessary to store rainwater and untreated waste water. For the results, indicators of faecal contaminants such as coli bacteria and intestinal sockets were taken into account, because they are a risk of human health. However, chemical pollutants were not registered.
The EU countries are cut off in the report:
Murder: “Confirmation for measures”
“The quality of our bath waters is very good. The result is a confirmation that our renovation and cleaning measures have a major impact in recent decades,” said the responsible Minister of Agriculture Norbert Tettschnig (ÖVP). “We invest a lot of money in the renovation and protection of our waters.”
Leena Ylä-Monors attributes water quality to the EU regulations: “We can all be happy that the vast majority of our bath water is clean enough to swim in it. This is thanks to the systematic work in the context of EU regulations that have steadily improved the health of our waters.” In the future, attention must be paid to the resistance of the waters and the challenges of climate change and excessive use.
