Investigation against Cobra – shots at the campsite: the victim had no weapon

Date:

At the end of June, tragic scenes took place at a campsite in Keutschach in Carinthia: a 20-year-old man from Lower Austria was shot by an officer during a Cobra operation. There is now a report confirming that the young man was unarmed.

The 20-year-old had barricaded himself in a powder room and threatened to injure himself. When rescuers offered him help, the situation escalated: the man threatened to save with an alleged firearm, after which the Cobra left. During the arrest, two shots were fired by a Cobra agent at the 20-year-old. The seriously injured, who was hit in the hip and shoulder area, had to be taken to hospital.

The first report on the operation is now available: Although the Cobra officers have not yet been questioned about the incident, it is clear that the Lower Austrian was unarmed. “The man had no weapon with him,” said prosecutor Tina Frimmel-Hesse. How the shots could have come about is under investigation. Because he had no weapon with him, he would have had a razor blade with him, with which he also injured himself in the women’s restroom.

Investigations launched against officials
To clarify the circumstances, a preliminary investigation has been launched against the agent. Frimmel-Hesse: “It concerns the suspicion of serious physical injury by a civil servant.” This offense could carry a prison sentence of up to seven and a half years!
