The American software company Microsoft has created an unconventional clothing collection together with the American designer Gavin Mathieu. Under the “Hardwear” brand, the Windows group recently started selling bodysuits, caps and pullovers with Windows wallpaper and other computer motifs printed on them. Fun is not cheap…
Microsoft has long been selling fan items through its online store — like Xbox or “Halo” T-shirts and Christmas sweaters that are as traditional as they are ugly. Previous fan articles had in common that they were quite affordable. T-shirts usually cost around $20.
“Hardwear” clothing is not cheap
When it comes to the ‘Hardwear’ designer collection, customers have to dig much deeper into their wallets. The T-shirt with the Windows XP print costs a whopping 60 dollars, and for a gray sweater you have to pay even 85 dollars. Even a scornful Kapperl costs $48. Of course, Microsoft emphasizes that it’s not just about clothing, but a statement. “Behind every part of Hardwear is a meaning.”
Given the inconspicuous to curious appearance of many ‘hardwear’ products, many interested parties will probably wonder how the high price has come about. Microsoft emphasizes in a blog post that the unspectacular to nerdy look is intentional: “The collection reflects the normcore style, a lifestyle aesthetic that focuses on people, not the clothes they wear.”
