The forest fire at the Bundesheer training ground in Großmittel in Lower Austria, which kept emergency services in suspense yesterday, has flared up again. That is why fire fighting helicopters are currently being used again.
As reported, more than 700 firefighters from more than 20 fire brigades and members of the armed forces fought a forest fire yesterday in the area of the Großmittel training ground. By evening the fire was out except for a few embers. As many as five air traffic police and army fire fighting helicopters had been dropping water from the sky for hours.
Flames fueled by wind
However, around noon on Thursday, the strong wind fanned the fire again. In addition to the weirs in Felixdorf and Wiener Neustadt, Haschendorf, Ebenfurth, Sollenau, Siegersdorf and Zillingdorf Bergewerk, there are also fire associations of the federal army on duty.
Firefighting helicopter on site
To prevent the flames from spreading again, the military is currently deploying multiple helicopters: “An OH-58 Kiowa uses a thermal imaging camera to give us an accurate view of the embers from the air, which are then specifically combated by two Alouette III fire fighting helicopters,” Colonel Mario Ernst, commander of Panzer Grenadier Battalion 35, which is in charge of the entire firefighting operation, told the “Krone”.
