In the 2021/22 kindergarten year, a total of more than 70,000 children under the age of three and more than 250,000 children between the ages of three and five went to childcare. In Austria, almost every third child (29.1 percent) under the age of three was taken care of in the 2021/22 kindergarten year. This is a new high.
The share of children aged three to five in care rose to 94.1 percent (2020/21: 93.0). Statistics Austria presented the current figures on Thursday
Ten years ago, in the 2011/12 kindergarten year, only one in five children under the age of three was in a childcare facility. This was 90.9 percent in all age groups. Statistics Austria includes crèches and small childcare facilities (crèches, crèches), kindergartens (general kindergartens, integration, special and practical kindergartens), out-of-school care centers and mixed care.
Vienna in first place
The highest percentage of children under three years of age in nurseries is in Vienna (44.3), the lowest in Styria (18.6) and Upper Austria (19.6). Except for Vienna, only Burgenland (37.0) and Vorarlberg (30.9) are above the Austrian average of 29.1 percent. There was, however, growth in all federal states compared to the previous year.
2.1 percent of 1-year-olds in care
In individual years, more than half of two-year-old children in Austria attend childcare (57.9); for one-year-olds the childcare percentage is 26.4 percent. In contrast, only 2.1 percent of children under the age of one are housed in daycare centers.
