the Italian Prime Minister, mario draghiwill tender his resignation this afternoon following the crisis unleashed in his governing coalition by one of its key partners, the Five Star Movement (M5S).
This is what Draghi has communicated today to the components of his executive branch in the Council of Ministers, in accordance with what his environment has communicated, and he will offer his resignation to the President of the Republic tonight, Sergio Mattarella
His decision comes after the M5S decided this morning not to vote on a vote of no confidence in the Senate, which distanced him from the rest of the partners in the national unity coalition that Draghi has chaired since February 2021.
“I want to announce that this afternoon I will tender my resignation to the President of the Republic. Today’s vote in Parliament is a very important event from a political point of view,” Draghi told the Council of Ministers meeting in Rome.
And he added: “The majority of the national unity that has supported this government since its inception no longer exists and the trust pact based on the government’s action has ended.”

Draghi had already warned that he would not rule without the M5S, despite the fact that his departure from the coalition did not stand in the way of his continuity, as he still had the support of a comfortable parliamentary majority.
The final hurdle between Draghi and the leader of the M5S, Giuseppe Conteaexactly his predecessor in office, is an inflation-backed decree that the “anti-caste” party considers and criticizes as “inadequate” for including measures such as financing an incinerator for the city of Rome.
But before that, they’d had infamous disagreements, given the M5s’ doubts about continuing to arm the Ukrainian resistance.
Draghi took charge of the executive in February 2021 to deal with the pandemic crisis, following the fall of Conte, and he did so with a coalition that included all parties except Italy’s ultra-brothers of Giorgia Melonic
When Draghi steps down for Mattarella, he will be the one to decide the steps to take, which could range from appointing someone else to rule or even calling early elections and not waiting for the term of office to expire in March 2023, as more and more parties are demanding politicians.
The most interested in general elections is Meloni, who as the only opposition to Draghi is the one growing the most in the polls and has already been placed as the first force in the country.
