Due to the high temperatures, the second reactor is now also closed with the more than 50 -year -old Bennau Swiss nuclear power plant. According to the operator, this has nothing to do with the safety of the reactors, but with environmental requirements.
The AXPO Operator must observe limit values for the water temperatures of the Aare. It costs water to cool the reactors of the river and leads it back later – warmer than before.
If the Aare is already very hot due to the external temperatures, hot water may not be started. This should protect the Aare Flora and Fauna, as the AXPO reports. According to the Federal Office for the Environment, the water temperature was 24.6 degrees south of the nuclear power plant.
Beznau Reactors went online in 1969 and 1971
The first of the two reactors of the Kennau nuclear power plant was already closed on Tuesday, the second was removed from the network on Wednesday evening. AXPO assured that there is still sufficient electricity for industry and households in Switzerland.
The two reactors in Bennau came into effect in 1969 and 1971 and are therefore still the oldest nuclear power stations in the world. They are not ten kilometers southwest of the city of Waldshut-Tiengen from Baden-Württemberg.
Switzerland has decided to a nuclear phase, but can work existing systems as long as they are safe. AXPO wants to get toe 1 and 2 of the network according to the current plans 2032 and 2033.
