In early July, there was an armed conflict between migrants on the Serbian-Hungarian border near Subotica. One person was killed and several others were injured. Since then, there has been an increased warning in the area. On Thursday, 85 migrants were arrested in a raid. Police also seized numerous weapons and ammunition.
Even automatic weapons have been found. In a statement, the police spoke of an operation to “curb crimes committed by criminal migrants”. “Serbia will not allow criminals to endanger our lives,” Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin said.
Countless migrants try to cross the border into Hungary from Subotica. But that is a difficult undertaking, because the Hungarian border fence and the intensive surveillance by the border police reduce the chances of migrants entering the EU illegally. For that reason, those waiting always turn to gangs of people smugglers, who apparently fight their feuds among themselves. Some of the weapons found could also come from such a gang’s arsenal.
