To offer better protection against floods, the Drau gets a new side arm in Upper Carinthia. This is not the only project, more are on the agenda.
An adjacent arm of the Drau is currently above the mouth of the Möll – between Drautal Straße B100 and the fall in the Run in Möllbrücke. The water management of the country is currently continuing the revitalization of the Upper Drau.
“The side arm is planned on a surface of approximately 8,300 square meters and is between eight and 20 meters wide according to the inlet area. The planned excavation volume is a good 20,000 cubic meters,” explains project manager Herbert Mandler from water management. In addition, a breastfeeding water with a surface of approximately 1500 m² must be built.
More room for river
The whole thing should offer the river more space. “In addition to the stabilization of the busty sole and the improvement of ecological diversity, such measures have a positive effect on the protection of floods. Floods are retained, streams are slower. And flood ends are steamed.”
About 1.5 hectares of arable land is required for the construction. “We want to thank you for making landowners available for the public sector!” Said Mandler. And the councilor Daniel Fellner emphasizes: “By re -giving the Drau, we protect people, habitats and invest in the future of our home country.”
A million euros for project
After a summer vacation, the connection of the supporting arm with the Drau should pass in the fall. Then the new coasts are partially protected with a water modules. Completion is planned in the spring of 2026. The costs are a million euros. The federal government takes more than 75 percent. The rest of the banking communities, ÖBB, street administration and network are shared.
Further recovery on the Drau will follow. “Planning runs for this and for passive protection of floods, such as in Irschen, Fellbach in Steinfeld and from Rosenheim to Spittal,” says Mandler.
