Experts sound the alarm: Death dramas due to a lack of emergency doctors such as in Styria can also take place in Tyrol. The emergency room Schönberg in the Stubai Valley, among others, is affected. Apparently there are also problems in Imst and Hall.
It was June 24, 2022. Due to an emergency at 9 p.m. in Mieders in the Stubai Valley, the Tyrol control center set the rescue chain in motion. The problem with this: There was no emergency doctor at the emergency room in Schönberg, which is located in the immediate vicinity of the Mieders site. For the time being, only one paramedic was sent to Mieders – as a sort of “first responder”.
Minutes that can make the difference between life and death
Almost at the same time, the Tyrol control center alerted the emergency doctor in Innsbruck, who was making the 15-kilometre journey to Mieders. In comparison, the distance between the emergency room in Schönberg and the scene is only about four kilometers. A difference where, in an emergency, minutes pass unused that can make the difference between life and death. The additional problem: the emergency doctor “Innsbrucker” was missing in the state capital. The control center of Tyrol has confirmed the course of the mission in Mieders to the “Tiroler Krone”.
Insiders know of several similar emergencies where there was no local A&E doctor present and therefore not available in Schönberg. There would be a similar problem in Hall and Imst. “There should be a fear of deaths like in Styria,” it says.
“Recently lost several emergency doctors on this base“
Wilfried Unterlechner, one of the three directors of the regional association of the Red Cross in Tyrol, knows the problem of the emergency doctor in Schönberg. “We recently lost several emergency physicians on this base,” Unterlechner reveals. An emergency physician had canceled the service contract and there was a staff reduction due to age. “The security of supply is still given,” he emphasizes. Because a well-trained paramedic takes over primary care, an emergency doctor is alerted.
“In any case, there are different expert opinions about which is better: if the emergency doctor comes to the patient first or if the patient is transported directly to the hospital,” says the director. The missing emergency room posts in Schönberg “are being filled in any case”, the tenders are ongoing.
