Cologne’s judiciary has lifted the warrant for the arrest of Nazi criminal Alois Brunner, who had been on the run since 1945, and has halted the search and trial. The Burgenlander was a close associate of Holocaust organizer Adolf Eichmann and was involved in the deportation and murder of more than 128,000 Jews.
110 years after his birth, Brunner is legally dead, according to a preliminary report from the German news magazine Der Spiegel.
Lost three fingers and an eye
Brunner went into hiding after the end of the war and later fled to Syria. Germany, Austria and other countries unsuccessfully demanded the extradition of Brunner. Israel’s foreign intelligence agency Mossad is said to have made several failed attempts to assassinate Brunner. He reportedly lost three fingers and an eye. In an interview, Brunner taunted his victims as “human waste”.
As early as 2017, the media reported that Brunner had died in appalling conditions in Syria in 2001 at the age of 89. It was said at the time that he had spent the past few years in the basement of an apartment building in Damascus.
