Mayor Roberto Galtieri van Rome has an ambitious project: inspired by the French model that the mayor wants to make the Tiber suitable for swimming. The goal is not only to clean the river, but to bring it permanently back to the citizens – as a place of meeting, relaxation and, in the long term, even as a resort by the sea.
Now the mayor has set up a technical committee under the leadership of the Sabrina Alfonsi municipal councilor, reported in collaboration with environmental authorities, the Latium region and other institutions such as media. The committee is intended to plan renovation work along the Tiber Bank. A procedure that should be possible to clean the river is discussed.
Rat plague is difficult to eliminate
A central point is the improvement of water quality, mainly because of the inclusion of industrial waste – especially of the aniestriver that flows into the Tiber. A problem is the plague of rat that is not easy to solve. A few million rodents are now populating the Tiber Bank and the Rome sewer system. The only effective means of reducing this plague is to improve hygiene, experts emphasized.
At the same time, the city is working on a strategic plan for city planning and ecological upgrades. New bicycle and pedestrian bridges over the Tiber are planned.
