In Austria, the first delivery of a vaccine against monkeypox is imminent. As the Ministry of Health announced Friday, it should arrive next week. Initially, however, its use is only intended for risk groups. Currently, 83 people in Austria suffer from monkey pox.
The procurement of a vaccine against monkeypox is taking place in a joint process at European level – with support from Germany, Austria was also able to secure further supplies from the European contingent.
On Friday, the ministry published the recommendations of the National Immunization Commission (NIG) for vaccination against monkeypox: Specifically, vaccination is only recommended for certain risk groups, initially for workers in laboratories and for people who have come into direct contact with the virus.
Vaccination also for the general population?
Depending on availability, however, a vaccination can also be offered to people with individual risk behaviour. According to the NIG, risky behavior occurs when people have frequent, alternating sexual contact. In Austria, according to the Ministry of Health, mainly men with same-sex partners are currently affected by monkey pox.
Vaccination of the general population was not recommended because of the epidemiology, the course of infection and the low probability of infection.
Number of infections continued to rise
So far, 83 people have been infected with monkey pox in Austria. That is 21 more than last week. The disease course of monkeypox infections is usually mild. There have been no deaths to date.
