Milker ÖAMTC expert Roland Frisch gives valuable tips on how handlebars will be fine at their destination, even in bad weather conditions and what they should not do.
In recent weeks it has impressively proven: actually unannounced storms that flood under water in a short time. There is then an increased caution for road users – Keyword: aquaplaning! “The vehicle no longer has direct contact with the road. The tires swim and you lose control,” explains Roland Frisch, head of the ÖAMTC Driving Technology Center in Milk. From 80 km/h this danger increases sharply, with the tires crazy. “Ideally, the tires have a profile of at least four millimeters. Less is not recommended,” said Frisch.
Stay calm
But what should you do if a steering wheel suddenly “floated”. “First and foremost stay calm, send in the direction of travel and at the same time kick the link,” said the expert. Brakes must be avoided. With automatic transmission, however, it is sufficient to only go off the gas.
Catching up maneuvers and changing lane should be avoided in the case of storm. Above all, driving along trucks or campers is particularly risky. “You first get into the suction of the wind shadow and you will then be hit by the side wind with full power,” says Frisch. Moreover, a lot of water collects in gears. “One sided aquaplaning can suddenly pull the car in one direction,” he warns. Then it is important to make the steering run calm, but certainly with both hands.
If you feel completely insecure, you must be advised again to secure the vehicle and wait for the storm.
