The faces of war victims

On June 27, a rocket hit a shopping center. He killed 21 people. A few more were consumed by the fire. His remains have not been found. There were a thousand civilians in the place. The international shock was enormous. The ‘Ukrainska Pravda’ wanted to pay tribute to the victims. Here are some.

Beauty salon owner Oksana, 48, went to the mall to buy a water heater. His remains were found four days later. “It was terrifying. We expected him to be in the hospital, but…”, a friend recalled.

Daniil, 25, worked at the Comfy appliance store. The missile hit the store directly. His sister remembers him as a “quiet with a rich inner world” pacifist, though he waited to be summoned.

A 41-year-old lawyer, she visited commercial galleries in the company of her young son, who miraculously escaped death. Olena could only be identified by DNA. “Intelligent, professional and honest”, define her family members. “We love her for who she was.”

By the age of 21, he had studied computer science and had the ambition to work in a company. She went to the center to do some shopping with her mother and the two broke up inside. The explosion happened near where Anna was, whose death could not be confirmed until two days later.

“Friendly, honest and open.” That’s how those who knew this 23-year-old who worked at Comfy remember him. The rocket killed him instantly. His grandmother could not suppress her desolation at the funeral. “Lord, why did you take it from us?” he exclaimed.

“I walked down the hall. He left the laboratory. We greet each other as usual. She smiled. It was our last meeting. A few hours later, he was gone,” recalls a colleague. They were both nurses in a hospital. Julia leaves a daughter.

On June 27, Yevhenii, 27, had a day off, but the business owner called her to ask her to come and work in the galleries. “How scary is it to say ‘was’. But since that black day, this has been my reality. My son loved life,” says his mother.

Her mother, a 22-year-old mobile accessories consultant, spent days searching for her in hospitals and funeral homes in Kremenchuck. No one could give him references until a DNA test could finally identify the remains. The missile had hit him straight.

Director of an art studio, the beginning of the war surprised her in Orlando (USA). In May, he participated with his paintings in an exhibition to raise money for humanitarian aid and then returned to Ukraine. “I really wanted to go home.”

Three weeks before the attack, he got a job as a consultant at Comfy. At the age of 26, he was excited about the job. His sister and some friends sought him out after the bombing, hoping he wouldn’t be in the store at the time. In vain.

Credit expert, age 31, worked at a bank. Her colleagues remember her as a “determined” woman and a team leader. Her husband regrets going to work early that morning and not kissing her so as not to wake her up.
