A terrible accident happened on Thursday while woodworking in the Großwalsertal in Vorarlberg. A 21-year-old man was hit on the head by a suspension cable saddle and seriously injured.
The 21-year-old was in the common area at 12:50 p.m. Sunday pulling a suspension cable saddle into a tree with a suspension cable running through a pulley. The grab attached to the other end of the rope was attached only to a cut branch with a strap – a loop.
Lusstrop slipped over the cut branch
When the young man then pulled the rope to raise the so-called saddle, the sling slipped over the cut branch. As a result, the hoist hoisted toward the bypass pulley and the suspension cable saddle fell on the man’s head.
The 21-year-old suffered serious head injuries and, after receiving first aid from the emergency doctor, had to be flown in the Christophorus 8 rescue helicopter to the state hospital in Feldkirch for further treatment.
