In Vienna, more people cycled in the first half of the year than ever before. In total, 4.48 million cyclists were registered at 13 bicycle counting stations, which have also been in existence for four years. This is a new record!
Specifically, 90,000 more people were registered than in the same period last year – and even 750,000 more than comparable counts before the corona pandemic. The value in the previous year had also set a new record, as announced by the Austrian Traffic Club.
On the Praterstern, the most cyclists were counted this year, around 623,300. This is followed by four more counting points, where more than 500,000 people cycled in the first six months this year: Lassallestraße (526,200), Operngasse (522,500), the innermost Opernring (520,800) and Argentinierstrae (517,000).
Need more bicycle paths and more greenery
“More and more people are cycling in the public transport city of Vienna and that’s a good thing. Because the bicycle is a cheap, climate-friendly and space-saving means of transport. If we regularly travel by bike instead of by car, we not only save a lot of money and avoid climate-damaging CO2, but we also get a regular dose of healthy exercise,” emphasizes Michael Schwendinger of the VCÖ.
The traffic club reiterated its demand for an improvement of the cycling infrastructure. It was pointed out, for example, that extensive parking management had freed up a lot of space in a number of streets in Vienna. The districts are being called upon to quickly use these now vacant spaces for wider sidewalks, better bicycle connections and, in the fight against the heat, for more greenery along the streets.
