The Carinthian Ruhrmann family was dangerously close to the forest fire in Bibione. They describe their impressions after the flaming inferno at the “Krone”.
„krone“: Mr Günther Ruhrmann, you are currently on holiday in Italy with your family. Where were you when the fire broke out?
Gunther Ruhrmann: We are accommodated at the “Camping Village Pino Mare” in Lignano. Our tent was only about 500 meters from the fire as the crow flies. After the fire started in the agricultural field, it spread to the pine forest. Within an hour, the fire spread rapidly. Without the Tagliamento River in between, the flames would certainly have reached us.
How did you experience the situation on the ground on Friday?
On the other hand, the ferry was no longer allowed to go there. Some holidaymakers jumped into the sea in panic. Then they were taken out of the water by boats. I myself have been a firefighter with the Guttaring volunteer fire brigade in Carinthia for almost 26 years and I am very happy that I have never experienced an inferno like this.
The fire was brought under control on Saturday night. How can you imagine the current situation – is the holiday mood clouded?
We probably noticed the extinguishing work with the helicopters, but otherwise we don’t notice any restrictions on vacation.
