As the CPI rose as a result of the war-induced crisis, the number of places, overnight stays and tourists available in the Basque Country continued to increase between January and May. In the CAV, tourism accounts for 6.4% of GDP, a figure that is constantly increasing according to EITB DATA.

the sector of Tourism continues to grow steadily in Euskadi and Navarrawith a strong recovery after the end of the pandemic, gradually growing the weight it occupies in gross domestic product (GDP) of the economy, albeit with certain differences between the CAV and Navarra. every time there is one greater supply of tourist places, whether in hotels, apartments or tourist residences, there is greater demand and higher costs for tourism. This follows from the latest EITB DATA study conducted on the tourism sector, which EITB is publishing today in all its media.
For example, in the case of the Basque Country in 2010, tourism accounted for 5.4% of total GDP, 6.3% in 2015 and, already in 2019, 6.4%. In this way, the contribution of tourism to the GDP of the Basque Country maintains its constant upward trend.
In contrast, in Navarra, the weight of GDP has stagnated, from 5.3% in 2010 to 5.4% in 2015, a percentage that has not changed since then. In contrast, in the state as a whole, in addition to increasing weight in the economy, the state continues to rise steadily, contributing 10.2% in 2010, 11.1% in 2015 and 12.4% in 2019.

In the Basque Country, most of it corresponds to inbound tourism (related to non-residents traveling), while in Spain, internal expenditure stands out (arising by residents during their travels within the territory or abroad).
Another figure that is consistent with its weight in GDP is the number of hotel beds offered. For example, according to INE and Eurostat, the number of places available between January and May (these data are taken to be able to compare it with 2022) in the Basque Country and Spain has increased until 2019, while in Navarra they are the largest the same. However, in 2022 they rose to 30,960 only in the Basque Country (compared to 23,840 in 2010).

Looking at the indicator for the number of beds per 1,000 inhabitants, the Basque Country is at the bottom of the Autonomous Communities, with 13 beds, only before Murcia (data 2019). Across, Balearic Islandswith 175, and Canary Islandswith 116, set the maximum values. Navarra it is in twelfth position, with 18 beds per 1,000 inhabitants.
With the European framework as a reference, Spain is in fourth place, with an average of 42 beds per 1,000 inhabitants, behind Cyprus (102), Greece (78) and Croatia (42), but before tourist destinations as referential as Italy (38) or Portugal (35).
The price of tourism and hospitality, also on the rise
The evolution of the CPI for tourism and hospitality shows, in May 2022, a year-over-year price growth in all autonomous communitiesin line with the CPI evolution data of recent months (between January and May 2022 an average of 6.5% in the overall CPI).
On an annual basis, from May 2021 to May this year, electricity prices in the Basque Country have increased. Hostel and tourism 6.3% and 4.9% in Navarre.

The effect of tourist housing
All this data has only been taken into account for hotel beds. The data on places in tourist accommodation is not presented in the same plane as hotel accommodation, because there are no official statistics yet. Digital platforms have revolutionized access to the offer of individuals for this type of “tourist housing”.
According to the available data, only since 2020 and through a statistic that is in the experimental phase, it is an offer close to the volume of hotel beds and generally located in the same tourist destinations.
