The firefighting operation after the fire at the Großmittel military training area in Ebenfurth (Wiener Neustadt district) has been provisionally terminated on Sunday, but they are still reachable, a spokesman for the district fire command of Wiener Neustadt said. The army is now fighting embers, a flare-up must be prevented, according to the military command of Lower Austria.
The fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon outside an area used as ammunition storage in a restricted military area. It was probably caused by the spontaneous combustion of a piece of ammunition. Extinguishing the fire was difficult due to the risk of duds and therefore only partially possible from the air.
1400 firefighters on duty
According to the district fire command of Wiener Neustadt, about 1,400 firefighters have been deployed in recent days – mainly from the neighboring districts, but also from all over Lower Austria when it comes to special forces. For the fire brigade, the deployment on the military training area is over, the other embers are kept under control by the army itself. The military leadership assumes that this work will take several more days.
