EU finalizes new package of sanctions against Russia as bombing ramps up in eastern Ukraine

Date:

The 27 will discuss the veto of Moscow’s gold and the inclusion of new names on the sanctioned list next Monday

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the regrouping of troops in a new offensive phase that intensifies airstrikes in eastern Ukraine. Amid this tension, the European Union (EU) will discuss a new package of sanctions against Russia this Monday, which aims not only to close the gaps discovered in previous rounds, but also to veto on imports of Muscovite gold – the largest buyer is the UK – and add new names to the sanctioned list. These measures do not raise relevant concerns among the various delegations, according to European sources, so they are expected to be adopted quickly during the week.

“Moscow must continue to pay a high price for its aggression,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The meeting will also discuss the situation in Ukraine and how to strengthen the coordinated response of the international community, with the involvement of other partners outside the EU. It is also agreed to invest another 500 million euros to buy weapons so that the Kiev army can fight Russian repression.

The military aid comes at a time when the Kremlin has stepped up its offensive in the east of the country. In recent hours, the invaders have bombed several positions in Kharkov, Mykolaiv and Donetsk. In the first area, Ukraine’s second city, the attack took place at dawn. “One of the floors of a five-storey industrial complex caught fire after the rocket impact. A 59-year-old woman was injured and is in hospital,” explains the governor of the region, Oleg Sinegubov.

Mykolaiv’s political leader Vitalii Kim also denounced several attacks between Saturday and Sunday morning. “About ten powerful explosions thundered in Mykolaiv. At the moment we have information about a fire at two industrial plants,” the governor warned, adding that the cities of Shevchenkove, Zoria and Novoruske were also bombed. “Three people were killed and three others were injured,” Kim added. In addition, a woman was killed in the airstrike in Shirokov, which “destroyed a residential building”.

In Donetsk, “Russians continue to bomb civilian infrastructure,” lamented the governor, Pavlo Kirilen, confirming the deaths of three civilians and wounding a dozen. A bloodshed that adds to the Kremlin’s long blacklist. Given the situation, an Estonian delegation is analyzing possible war crimes committed by Russian forces since Putin ordered the invasion on February 24.

Meanwhile, on the anniversary of the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine in 2014 (everyone on board died, 283 passengers and 15 crew members), President Volodímir Zelensky assured this Sunday that “all criminals will be brought to justice.” brought” and claimed that Russia “continues to cause pain” in the country.
