54,500 doses bought – EU buys more monkeypox vaccine

Date:

In the fight against monkey pox, the EU is creating another vaccine. The competent authority has secured 54,530 third-generation cans from the Bavarian Nordic company, the EU commission announced on Monday. Thus, a total of 163,620 cans purchased through the EU would be available for the 27 EU countries plus Norway and Iceland. In New York, meanwhile, mass vaccination against monkeypox began this weekend (video above).

“I am concerned about the rising number of monkey pox cases in the EU,” said EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides. She spoke of more than 7,000 cases and an increase of nearly 50 percent from the previous week. The EU had already bought about 110,000 doses of the vaccine in June.

83 confirmed cases so far in Austria
In Austria, the Ministry of Health has reported 83 confirmed cases so far. The National Vaccination Commission (NIG) recommends vaccinations only for risk groups such as exposed health professionals and people who have been in direct contact with the virus.

Mass vaccinations started in New York
However, in New York, authorities opened three vaccination centers on Saturday (video above) where interested parties can be vaccinated against monkey pox. Demand in the Big Apple was high. 9,200 vaccination appointments were arranged in just seven minutes. However, the vaccine is still extremely scarce – just like in Germany.

To date, nearly 1,500 cases of monkeypox have been recorded in the US, 390 of which are in New York alone. Due to the scarcity of vaccines, the vaccination campaign is only getting off to a slow start. So far, almost only men who have sex with men have been affected. But anyone can get infected.
