“Pilgrimage of Penance” – Pope travels to Canada despite knee pain

Date:

Knee pain that prevented Pope Francis from traveling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan last month continues. However, they do not stop the Pope from traveling to Canada from Sunday. This was emphasized on Wednesday by Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni.

“The knee pain is there, but less than before. As for his health, we’ll see moment by moment,” said Bruni. Francis has described his trip to Canada as a “penitent pilgrimage”.

Want to participate in pilgrimage
Pope Francis will travel to Canada from July 24 to 30. Visits to Edmonton, Quebec and Iqaluit on the Arctic Ocean are planned. The Pope is also visiting the community of Maskwacis and wants to participate in the pilgrimage to the traditional feast of St. Anne at Lac Sainte Anne.

The focus of the trip is discussions between the head of the church and indigenous representatives of the First Nations, Metis and Inuit. The former pupils of the so-called residential schools play a major role in this. In this, indigenous children in the 19th and 20th centuries were deprived of their culture, mistreated and also abused.
