Records broken – 37 degrees: Innsbruck held a heat record on Wednesday

Date:

Those who had to step out of their – hopefully – cool apartment or air-conditioned workplace on Wednesday were faced with tropical heat across the country. Temperatures from 30 degrees were displayed at about 160 of the 280 weather stations in the Alpine Republic. Records were also reported at high altitudes, such as on the Brenner Pass in Tyrol. The city heat record was also reported in the West: in Innsbruck, citizens were sweating at 37 degrees. Temperatures are still a little off the Austrian record. This is 40.5 degrees – measured in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg on August 8, 2013.

It was hot all over Austria on Wednesday, with over 30 degrees in most of the country around lunchtime. Heat poles were initially the Lower Austrian towns of Bad Deutsch-Altenburg and Pottschach, each with 35 degrees, according to the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics.

The clearly hottest city in the country was Innsbruck. At three other measuring points, at least 36 degrees were exceeded, namely again in Mayrhofen in Tyrol with 36.3, the same value was displayed in Gänserndorf in Lower Austria, while 36.6 degrees was reached in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg.

Air at the burner “burned”
At the weather station on the Brenner Pass in Tyrol, at 1412 meters above sea level, it was 30.6 degrees. This matched exactly the July 2015 record, and it was the second highest temperature ever recorded at the burner. The record stands at 31.1 degrees on the Brenner Pass, measured in June 2019.

Even above 2000 meters above sea level it was still above 20 degrees at 1.15 pm, for example on the Patscherkofel in Tyrol and on the Villacher Alpe in Carinthia.
