In view of numerous accidents, Bangladesh has now banned running on the roofs of trains. In the Asian country, this type of locomotion is widespread – but also extremely dangerous. People regularly die as a result.
“Under today’s Supreme Court order, trains are no longer allowed to carry additional passengers on the roof,” Deputy Attorney General Amin Uddin Manik told AFP news agency on Thursday.
Especially poor people, who cannot afford a ticket, climb on the roofs of the wagons for free. Even when the trains are hopelessly overcrowded, such as during the major Muslim festivals, when millions and millions of people travel to their native villages, countless passengers avoid the rooftops.
People regularly die because they are hit by overhanging branches or low bridges, for example, or simply fall from the wagons.
