This move was absolutely not allowed: at a chess tournament in Moscow, a robot checkmate his challenger by squeezing his finger. According to the chess federation, the seven-year-old boy was “not seriously injured”.
Video footage from the tournament shows the boy’s hand being suddenly crushed by the robot, which was playing three games at once, while making his move. Several men then have to rush to help the child free it.
According to Sergey Smagin, vice president of the Moscow Chess Federation, it is still unclear how the incident could have happened. The robot has been in use for about 15 years and has also appeared in places where there were more people, he told the Russian agency RIA Novosti.
“This is an extremely rare case, the first I can even remember,” Smagin said. The boy may have broken the safety rules under time pressure without realizing it. “We will have to analyze why this happened.” A ban on tournaments with the robot is currently not under discussion. “It’s absolutely safe.”

Information about how badly the child was injured varies. While several internet reports said the seven-year-old’s finger was broken in the incident, Smagin told the news agency that the boy was “not seriously injured”.
“Nothing bad happened, the boy went to the awards ceremony and signed the certificates. He’s fine. They put him in a cast to help his finger heal faster.”
