Five dead recovered – ship with 674 migrants rescued in Mediterranean Sea

Date:

Migrants have died again while crossing the Mediterranean. They had previously boarded a fishing boat carrying 674 migrants that was being taken to safety by the Italian coast guard off the coast of the southern Italian region of Calabria. There were also 30 unaccompanied minors on board. Five bodies were recovered from the water.

Some of the rescued migrants arrived in Sicily on Sunday and some in Calabria.

Previously, the coast guard had rescued other migrants on unseaworthy boats in Italian waters with the Italian naval vessel “Diciotti”.

The rescue ship “Ocean Viking” rescued an overcrowded inflatable boat with 87 people on board, which was floating in international waters off Libya. There were also several unaccompanied minors on board. Neither of them had a life jacket. The survivors are now being taken care of by the teams of the Red Cross and SOS Mediterranee.
