Pilot and passenger dead – after plane crash: police are investigating cause

After the drama with two deaths on Saturday, it is now established: Criminals want to clarify the cause of the plane crash. Only 15 minutes after the take-off of the small aircraft, the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit, towards evening the wreckage was found in the forest of the Styrian community of St. Lorenzen (Eastern Styria) with the two bodies. They should now also undergo an autopsy.

Smoke in the cockpit! According to this report, a 56-year-old pilot of a sports aircraft was unavailable on Saturday morning and the completely destroyed wreckage was found in a forest near Festenburg in the municipality of St. Lorenzen in eastern Styria in the late afternoon. A helicopter saw the crashed parts. On the spot, the emergency services then found the pilot and his East Styrian passenger (67): Both men could only be found dead.

Pilot was considered an experienced aviator
The pilot from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district was an experienced pilot. The 67-year-old who flew had purchased the scenic flight shortly in advance as part of a charity flight day in Pinkafeld, Burgenland. From there, the plane also took off in the direction of the exchange area before the emergency call was made fifteen minutes later.

Autopsy is being performed on bodies and investigations are underway
Criminals and the public prosecutor are now investigating why the accident happened. An expert has examined the components of the crash, technically the single-engine aircraft is still under investigation.

The prosecutor’s office also ordered autopsies on the two bodies. The wreckage could still be recovered on Sunday – initially it was considered unlikely due to the difficult-to-reach area. The extensive investigations are likely to continue.
