On June 6, the lights went out at the football match between Austria and Denmark at the Ernst Happel Stadium. Saturday evening there was another power outage in the Vienna Prater. From 7:50 p.m. to 10 p.m., parts of the amusement park in Leopoldstadt were dark. Passengers had to be evacuated.
Saturday evening it was very busy in the Prater. The mood was exuberant. But suddenly the power went out. Most rides came to a sudden stop. But nobody had to be afraid. Because the popular attractions are equipped with emergency generators. The emergency light went on in the ghost train. An employee got the passengers out after a brief jolt.
No fire or rescue operations required
Other companies also had to evacuate people. Anyone trapped on the roller coaster during the power outage was also safe. “Our employees are trained for this,” explains Stefan Sittler-Koidl, president of the Prater Association and owner of the “Volare”. In such cases, the brakes can be released and the vehicle can continue to drive. As a result, no fire brigade or rescue operation was needed on Saturday.
“The annoying thing is that there has been a power outage for the second time in a short time. And that in the middle of our regular opening hours on Saturday evening. That hurts economically,” Sittler-Koidl is angry. This time the Ernst Happel Stadium was hit again, as well as attractions in the amusement park and 400 households. The lights did not go out in all establishments. So the Ferris wheel continued to spin in full lighting. Wiener Netze, it was a “technical defect” that led to two outages that started at 19:39 in Leopoldstadt, the first was resolved at 21:32 and the second at 22:14.
On June 6, a broken power cord plug caused the power outage. At that time, 1,500 households were affected. Most had energy again within an hour. However, electricity was not restored in the Lusthaus area until the morning of June 7th.
Nevertheless, the Prater visitors were not distracted by their good mood on Saturday. After the park shone in its colorful lights again, it was open until 1 AM.
