Aggressive monkeys injured 42 people in Japan

Date:

Monkeys have injured 42 people in the Japanese city of Yamaguchi. The animals opened sliding doors or climbed into residential buildings through windows. They then bit and scratched the inhabitants. Authorities then resorted to stun weapons to bring the matter under control.

The incidents happened in recent weeks. “It’s unusual to see so many attacks in such a short time,” a city official said Monday. Residents of Yamaguchi reported that the monkeys would open sliding doors or climb in through windows. “I heard screams on the ground floor and quickly ran downstairs. Then I saw a monkey bending over my child,” a Japanese father told Maininchi Shimbun newspaper.

Fall not failed so far
According to the newspaper, the monkeys initially only attacked children and women, but recently men have been affected as well. So far, the police have not been able to lure the animals into the traps that have been set up. That is why the authorities have now resorted to tranquilizer weapons.

The Japanese macaques responsible for the attacks are part of Yamaguchi’s cityscape. However, they are considered a nuisance because they prey on cultivated crops.
