Seven o’clock in the morning: professional fisherman Emmerich Varga from Gols drives his salty lake onto the Neusiedler See. Not to cast the nets and earn his daily bread, but to take dead fish out of the water.
As reported, the animals in the lake have run out of oxygen. Particularly sensitive species such as Siechling, also called goat, or pikeperch are affected. They die from the warm water, where less oxygen is stored for them.
In some places the water is 60 centimeters deep, in other places as much as a meter.
Among them carp and pike
Few dead fish can be seen in the middle of the lake. However, if you drive into the small reed coves, you will find them in abundance. “The wind drives the dead animals here,” Varga explains as he tries to get all the carcasses out of the water. There are also carp and pike.
“When you see that, your heart bleeds,” admits the man from Gols, whose family has been fishing on Lake Neusiedler See for four generations. He also believes that something must be done quickly, otherwise the fish and the sea will be a thing of the past.
rain important
The best way to fill the lake is rain. That would defuse the situation. But no one knows how long it will take for sufficient precipitation to fall.
The last time the Neusiedler See dried up was from 1865 to 1871. You don’t want it to get that far now.
