Medical sensation in Vienna: An aortic valve sheath is now successfully used for the first time in the AKH.
This patient can finally laugh freely again. Because last week Christoph R. from Lower Austria had a plastic gauze implanted to cover his aortic valve by two professors from the AKH’s heart surgery department in Vienna. For example, the doctors probably saved the 51-year-old’s life. And just five days after the surgery, he was even able to be released to be cared for at home.
Specifically, the heart patient suffered from an imminent enlargement of the body’s aorta. His aorta had already grown to a threatening 54 millimeters. And people who suffer from such enlargement (aneurysm) of the body’s main artery run the risk of breaking the wall or – worse – bursting a blood vessel, often with fatal consequences.
“With this new treatment method, the implant is precisely tailored to the patient’s anatomy after a CT scan,” explains Professor Kocher in the “Krone” interview. “This innovative surgical method developed in England is based entirely on personalized medicine,” added Professor Laufer, head of the AKH cardiac surgery clinic. This month, the surgical procedure was successfully performed for the first time in Austria.
And: The implant is even performed without the aid of the heart-lung machine. Cost of the implant: 9000 euros.
