Pastor Augustin (60) has disappeared without a trace after Friday’s devastating storm in the Tyrolean Stubai Valley. A new search was called off Monday with no results. Further use is initially impossible after the heavy rainfall and further mudslides.
“We don’t have a chance at the moment,” said Konrad Kirchebner of the APA’s Tyrolean water rescue service. After the recent mudslides, the visibility in the water was not good because of the pollution and the water level was also much too high.
“Looking for a Needle in a Haystack”
“We will have to wait for better weather,” Kirchebner continued. The situation will be reviewed on Wednesday. The task, however, is “looking for a needle in a haystack,” he explained the challenge.
Discovered more car parts
The search for the cleric continued Monday afternoon. The Ruetz creek bed was searched, and again only vehicle parts were found. Some of the wreckage was found on Saturday and later private items such as a bible, business cards and documents.
The pastor was probably swept by the floods on Friday evening while he was in his car. The Diocese of Innsbruck, led by Bishop Hermann Glettler, called for prayers for the pastor on social media.
