The Basque government on Tuesday in the Board of Directors the Basque Electric Mobility Strategywhich provides a investment between 1,550 and 2,340 million euros until 2030, and whose objective is to define and address the decarbonisation strategies of the transport sector, the local and global perspectives on the electric vehicle, the assessments of previous electric mobility strategies and the axes for the 2030 action plan.

As reported in a press release from the Ministry of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government, the strategy will “have a significant impact on value added, employment, business competitiveness and innovation”. In this context, it is proposed to reach the 2030 horizon by electrifying 16% of the mobile fleet, 50% of the city buses and 80% of the taxi fleets.

For example, the new strategy proposes doubling the number of fast charging points in the Basque Country (80 50 kW charging stations – 12 ultra-fast charging locations), as well as launching 15 electric mobility projects in the Basque automotive sector, and ten charging technology projects. of electric vehicles, led by a private initiative and supported by the Basque government.

“Spearheading the adaptation of a key sector for the decarbonisation of the Basque economy”

“Electric mobility”, describes the Executive, “represents the spearhead of adapting a key sector for the decarbonisation of the Basque economy. Its development offers medium and long-term benefits to promote the energy transition in the Basque Country. The reason for these benefits is their synergy with smart grids and, by extension, with an integrated energy system as a whole,” says the source mentioned above.

The electric mobility sector, the note continues, “is also faced with questions and difficulties, so the legislation and the strategies and action plans for the coming years are key to decisively determine the course of this transformation”. The changes, the ministry says, will take place at all levels: international, European, state, regional, local and even within the citizenry itself.

Therefore, the strategy adopted today analyzes the magnitude and key indicators of mobility in the Basque Country, such as the mobile fleet or greenhouse gas emissions, and assesses the role of electric mobility in decarbonising transport and increasing the sustainability of the economy. “, he says.

Decarbonising the transport sector, the note states, will generate a range of opportunities to create added value, employment and industrial capacities and in the services sector in the Basque Country: “They are all linked in one way or another to the different tools that can be used to promote decarbonization”.

Executive obligations

The objective to decarbonise and reduce the dependence on oil in the transport sector is included in: commitments of the Basque Government, such as the Klima 2050 Strategy, the Euskadi 2030 Energy Strategy or the Sustainable Transport Plan (PDTS): “Therein, three axes seem to ensure the decarbonisation of transport: the increase in energy efficiency, the rationalization and optimization of the use of mobility and transport services, and the use of low-carbon fuels and energy carriers”.

These commitments also include specific proposals, such as promoting intermodality and modes of transport with lower greenhouse gas emissions, replacing the consumption of petroleum derivatives, integrating vulnerability and adaptation criteria into transport infrastructure, developing a public charging infrastructure covering the entire territory, providing a critical mass electric vehicles and adapt regulations to facilitate the penetration of electric technology into mobility.

Now the Basque Electric Mobility Strategy goes one step further and sets the targets for 2030.
